This paper analyzes the aesthetic category and hierarchy of Qi(vitality), Yun(rhythm) and Sheng Dong(vividness), pointing out their significance for English translation of Chinese poetry. It takes as an example Stephen Owen’s English translation of Li Bai’s poems, and explores the aesthetic value of his translated verses from three different dimensions. His translated verses represent the complex tone beauty of the “vitality” beauty and the interfusing poetic empathy beauty in the source poems. They also reflect the lingering charm of passion, rhythm beauty and formal orderly beauty in the “rhythm” beauty of source poems. Most important of all, the “vividness” beauty shows his pursuit of life form.
