Language cuteification is a remarkable pragmatic phenomenon in contemporary Chinese. It refers to the marked manipulations speakers perform at the phonetic, lexical, grammatical and other levels, which infuse utterances with a tone of cuteness, lightness, informality and interpersonal closeness. From the perspective of linguistic classification, cuteification overlaps with traditional morphological devices such as erhua (retroflex suffixation), diminutives and reduplication to a certain extent, yet retains its own distinctive features.
This paper presents a systematic account of Chinese language cuteification across four dimensions: phonetic cuteification, lexical cuteification, grammatical cuteification and graphological cuteification. Drawing on pragmatic and sociolinguistic perspectives, it analyzes the generative mechanisms and cultural-psychological motivations underlying this phenomenon, and further discusses how to address this linguistic phenomenon in International Chinese Language Education.
The study concludes that cuteification has become an indispensable component of the spoken Chinese stylistic continuum. Accordingly, International Chinese Language Education should shift its stance from "avoidance" to "selective teaching", so as to help foreign learners achieve appropriate communication through proper use of cuteified expressions on the basis of understanding their pragmatic functions.
