Abstract

The State of Zeng, a Ji-clan vassal state enfeoffed in the Han Dong region during the Zhou Dynasty, existed for approximately 700 years. With Suizhou in Hubei as its center, it controlled the vital “Jin-Dao-Xi-Xing” trade route and served as a strategic hub for the Zhou Dynasty’s administration of the southern territories. Archaeological discoveries of noble tombs and bronze artifact assemblages from the State of Zeng (such as those at the Yejiashan, Zaoshulin, and Leigudun sites) provide a complete chronological sequence spanning from the Western Zhou to the Warring States periods. The more than 300 inscribed bronze artifacts unearthed have become crucial materials for studying the history of the State of Zeng. Research on the inscriptions reveals that the State of Zeng is the “State of Sui” mentioned in historical texts. Through cross-verification of the “Zeng Hou Yu” chime bells and the “King of Chu’s Consort Sui Zhong Mi Jia” tripod, the century-long “Zeng-Sui controversy” has been resolved. The content of the inscriptions, their dating methods, and the evolution of their scripts not only reconstruct the political transformation of the Zeng State from a vassal state protecting the Zhou court to a tributary of Chu but also provide empirical evidence for the Zhou Dynasty’s dual governance strategy in the southern regions, which involved both “intervening in the affairs of the Huai Yi” and “providing protection to the Huai Yi.” Culturally, the bronze artifacts of the State of Zeng fused the Zhou ritual system with the craftsmanship of the Chu region (such as the twelve-tone system of the Zeng Hou Yi chime bells), demonstrating the deep interaction between Zhou and Chu civilizations. Technologically, the inscription “gold as the core, tin as the mold” and the lost-wax casting technique marked the pinnacle of ancient Chinese bronze technology. Research on the inscriptions of the State of Zeng’s bronze artifacts provides multidimensional empirical evidence for the political landscape, cultural integration, and technological dissemination of the Zhou dynasty.
