In the rich expressions of modern Chinese, the redundant negation, as a unique and common linguistic phenomenon, widely exists in both spoken and written Chinese. For instance, expressions such as "hao bu re nao (very lively)", "nan mian bu fan cuo (it is inevitable to make mistakes)", "cha dianr mei shuai dao (nearly fell down)". The negative markers "bu (not)" and "mei (did not)" do not undertake the semantic function of negation, yet they are retained formally, which forms redundant negation. Breaking the conventional one‑to‑one correspondence between form and meaning in traditional grammar, this phenomenon brings new reflections and challenges to the research on Chinese grammar.
