As the core concept of Raymond Williams’ cultural materialism, structures of feeling serve as a methodological bridge connecting individual experience and collective consciousness. In The Country and the City, Williams takes structures of feeling as a guide to explore the urban-rural relationship in British pastoral poetry. He criticizes the cognitive disjunction between urban progressivism and pastoralism in traditional urban-rural writing, while revealing the urban-rural development model under capitalism reflected in pastoral poetry and extending this model to the relationship between empires and colonies. Finally, by deconstructing the solidified logic of urban-rural opposition, he re-examines the militancy in urban-rural interaction and the appeal to reject division of labor and seek new forms of cooperation. Structures of feeling not only breaks through the limitations of traditional urban-rural narratives, but also dissolves social experience from solidified ideologies, providing critical insights for addressing urban-rural development issues in contemporary China.
