In medieval Western Europe, there was a war of the century waged by Christians against Muslims - the Crusades. The war profoundly affected the lives of the people of the Middle Ages and the spread of religious beliefs, and even played a considerable role in the Renaissance of the 16th century. During the First Crusade, a civilian crusade was the first to set out, but it was ultimately defeated for various reasons. This paper will focus on the civilian crusade in the First Crusade, and try to analyze the motivation of civilians to participate in the Crusades and the reasons for their ultimate failure through the course of the civilian crusade. This not only helps to provide an in-depth analysis of the living conditions of the common people in Western Europe in the Middle Ages, but also helps us to get closer to the Middle Ages and experience the religious fanaticism of the time.
