Becoming John Malkovich is a film directed by Spike Jonze and written by Charlie Kaufman, released in 1999. Cast by John Malkovich himself, the film is the first and most influential feature film by Spike Jonze with its subconscious ideology and visual media metaphors. Based on the script of "Becoming John Malkovich", this paper carefully interprets the presentation of the film and its related visual texts, combines gaze theory, and tries to explore the deep meaning of "gaze" and "being gazed" in "Becoming John Malkovich", and analyzes the self-cognition and identity construction of individuals from the perspective of gaze theory with the help of the dual opposition of gaze and anti-gaze embodied in visual texts.
