W. B. Yeats, an earnest devotee of Greek thoughts, believes that it is by creation and art to energize or activate one’s “will”, which in turn, resorts a tragic beauty to face and fight against agony. One of Yeats’ poem “Wild Swan at Coole” is of no exception of such terrible but pleasant beauty. In this poem, the poet, (also the homodiegetic narrator), with his chastity of diction and deep philosophy ideas, relates to one constant concern in his life- the art, in which a sense of loss, instantaneous nostalgia and contemplation of the erstwhile love are expressly given a vent to. What’s more, Yeats grasped the pause and flux of time, with his delicate combination of stillness and motion, conveyed a picturesque and artistic sense of beauty. In this poem, it is the image of swans that evoked his meditation and agony as if he had been drunk. However, deeply tinged with Greek and Nietzsche’s buoyant idea of tragedy, Yeats in the end accepted the inexorability of change and enjoyed a treasured tranquil inner peace. In this paper, the author is going to interpret Yeats’ reflection of Nietzsche’s thought in this poem and plays an autopsy on Yeats’ twisted but finally unshaken optimism or superman philosophy.
