The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the semantic direction of the Japanese adverb 'Chotto' depends on verb types. Example sentences containing adverb “Chotto” from the balanced corpus of contemporary written Japanese (BCCWJ) were analyzed. According to Kudou’s theory, verbs were divided into three types, action verb, state verb and stative verb. Based on analysis of all example sentences, we found that the semantic direction of adverb “Chotto” is related to verb types. In general, if the verb is an action verb, Chotto will denote the quantity of nouns or actions, and if the verb belongs to existential verb of stative verb or thinking verb of state verb, Chotto will also denote the the quantity of nouns or actions respectively. Moreover, if the verb belongs to perceptional verb, emotional verb, feeling verb of state verb, relational verb of stative verb, and features verb of stative verb, Chotto will modify degree.
