对禅宗典籍的释读，最关键的是先要把握其语义精髓，然后才能准确释读语言。《五灯会元》各位禅师说法，主要是要说明“佛是什么”的问题。因此，对这个问题的精辟回答，就是其语义精髓。“佛”就是对“性”的明了，这就是学佛的关键。“性”体现在作用中，对人体而言，有八种作用。任何一种作用，都能让人认识其本体，认识佛性。明白了这一点，《五灯会元》中的很多语句就不难释读了。
