Public signs in English are essential to the development of international exchanges in China. The paper discusses the existing problems of such public signs, classification of signs as well as applicable principles of translation, and concludes that all things considered, the translator should adopt a target language-centered approach and should, on the basis of that, strive to negotiate the differences between Chinese and western cultures, with an aim to ensure the target audience’s accurate and obstruction-free comprehension of the messages public signs convey.
